Getting a Library Card

Your Philadelphia University photo ID card is your library card. Currently registered students, and current faculty and staff, are automatically registered to borrow.

Loan Policies

The maximum number of items that can be checked out is 30

• Students may borrow books for 3 weeks.
• Students in the honors program may borrow books for 4 weeks.
• Graduate Students may borrow books for 6 weeks.
• Faculty and Staff may borrow books for the entire semester. Faculty and staff may also borrow media (videos. etc.)
• Alumni may borrow books from the collection. An alumni card is needed to gain entry to the building, and for eligibility for book borrowing. There is no fee for the card. For more information on Gutman Library services for alumni, go to our Alumni Services page.
• DVDs may be borrowed for 1 week by all borrowers; request DVDs at the circ desk.

Renewals

If materials are not overdue, and they have not been requested by another patron, they may be renewed in person or over the phone. Call the Circulation Desk at x2840.

Lost or Damaged Books

Borrowers are financially responsible for lost/missing books and damaged books. A replacement cost plus a $25 processing fee will be charged.

Reserves

Faculty frequently place books, articles and media on reserve for student use. These materials are listed on the library catalog and can be borrowed for in-library use at the Circulation Desk. A Philadelphia University photo ID is required to borrow.

Interlibrary Loan

To obtain materials that the Gutman Library does not own, students, faculty, and staff may initiate an interlibrary loan request to borrow a book or obtain a copy of an article or book chapter from another library. This service is free and is made possible by reciprocal agreements with neighboring libraries. Most loans are filled within 3-5 days, but to ensure sufficient lead time, please place requests 2 weeks in advance of your deadline.

Newly Acquired and In Processing

This status in our catalog means the item has recently arrived, but is still being prepared for addition to the collection. How do you get the item? Go to the Circulation Desk and ask a supervisor to request that the "in process" item be prepared for circulation. When it is available for loan, you will be notified to pick it up at the Circulation Desk.

Fines

There is a three day grace period after the due date during which fines do not accumulate. After these three days, fines accumulate at ten cents per day for all students.
